NASA’s OSIRIS-REx is sealed up and heading home, having grabbed such a big scoopful of samples that the capsule jammed open for a time.

With rubble from an asteroid tucked inside, a NASA spacecraft has fired its engines and begun the long journey back to Earth.
Key points:

  • Scientists expect between 200 and 400 grams of sample to return home
  • The spacecraft initially picked up more than 2kgs, but had to let some go
  • OSIRIS-REx is expected to land in the Utah desert in 2023

The 2.3 billion kilometre trip home for the robotic prospector, OSIRIS-REx will take two years.
